Does Microsoft Clarity track form drop-off? What it shows, and what it can't

Quick answer
Not field by field. Microsoft Clarity is free and its funnels show how many sessions reach each page or event, so you can see that people leave a form page. It has no report showing which field inside the form they quit on; you'd find that by watching recordings one at a time.
What Clarity shows about forms
Clarity gives you three tools that touch forms:
- Funnels: an ordered set of steps, built from page visits and smart events, with the share of sessions that made it through each step (Microsoft Learn). Good for "how many people who reached the form page got to the thank-you page".
- Heatmaps: where people click and how far they scroll, including clicks on form fields and buttons.
- Recordings: replays of single visits, where you can watch someone fill in (and leave) your form.
That's a lot for a free tool. For many sites, Clarity is the right place to start.
What it can't tell you
Funnel steps are pages and events, not fields. So Clarity can tell you that 60% of people who opened your quote form didn't send it, but not that most of them stopped at the phone field. To find that, you watch recordings until a pattern shows up. With a few hundred form visits a month, that's hours of watching, and it's easy to miss the pattern.
There's also no per-field measure of time, empty fields or error messages, which are the signals that point to the fix.
Consent changed what Clarity sees in Europe
Since 31 October 2025, Clarity needs a valid consent signal for visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland. Without consent it sets no cookies for those visitors, and features like recordings and funnels can be limited (Microsoft Learn). If many of your visitors click "Reject", your Clarity numbers for European traffic shrink accordingly.
Getting the most out of Clarity for forms
- Build a funnel from the form page to the thank-you page, so you know the overall drop-off.
- Filter recordings to sessions that visited the form page but not the thank-you page.
- Watch 20 or so of those, and note the last field each person touched.
- Check the heatmap for rage clicks on the send button: often a sign of an error message people can't see.
When to add a form tool
Add a form analytics tool when you want the answer without watching recordings: a funnel per field, with time, empty fields and errors for each one. Formleak does that from one line of code, sets no cookies and never reads what people type, so it also counts visitors who reject cookies. You can run it next to Clarity. - Not as a dedicated report. Its funnels, heatmaps and recordings cover forms, but there is no field-by-field view of where people quit.
- Can Clarity funnels use form fields as steps?
- Funnel steps are page visits and smart events. Individual fields inside a form aren't steps.
- Is Microsoft Clarity free?
- Yes, Clarity is free to use.
- Can I use Clarity and Formleak together?
- Yes. Clarity shows how people behave on your pages; Formleak shows what happens inside each form, field by field.
